Jocelyn

The sound of rain pelting the window stirs me from my sleep, and I groggily flop over, noticing Alex is gone from bed. I sit up, squinting at the clock on the wall as my eyes adjust to the hazy morning light.

Eleven?

That can't be right. I fumble for my phone on the nightstand and realize he's been gone for hours, and somehow, my alarms never went off.

Frowning, I pull on some clothes and make my way downstairs, where I find Niko and Remy sitting at the kitchen island making lunch and trading stories.

"Good morning," I mumble, pausing in the doorway. The two look up and immediately give me a smile.

"Good morning," Remy says, gesturing to the plate of avocado toast and scrambled eggs he's just set in front of me. "Fuel up. We have a busy day ahead of us."

"What do you mean?" I ask, cautiously taking a seat at the countertop and tugging the plate a little closer. My favorite.

"You're going to see in just a few," Niko explains, pushing his plate aside and resting his elbows on the table.

"Okay." I smile, glancing towards the living room. "Where's Vox?"

"Right here." The man in question strides through the garage door, carrying a giant box of supplies. "Just doing a little reconnaissance."

He sets it down, revealing a number of flashlights, cameras, and other gadgets, as well as a few manila folders. At my curious look, he grins. "That is your mission briefing, my lady," he says grandly, pulling out a folder labeled 'Case #766: Jocelyn'.

There's something about his easy smile that is both comforting and terrifying. As if he's seen a thousand tragedies and won't rest until he's fixed one more.

"But flashlights and—" I use the footrest to propel me out of my seat to get a better look in the box he sets on the counter. "Wait. Camping supplies? Alex hates camping."

"And you love it, so we'll fly there, and then we'll spend the day getting it all set up."

"How the hell did you convince Alex?"

Vanderbilts don't camp. Though I'm not sure which is rarer—camping or days off.

Niko and Remy share a look. "He mentioned the other day that he hasn't used any of his vacation time this year ... or any of the previous years," Remy explains.

Niko grins, patting his belly, which is less of a belly and more of a steel door. "Just promise unlimited S'mores."

I shake my head, laughing. They are crazy. Crazy, but maybe genius. "He's going to hate it. But he can't just leave on a whim, so we'll have to push this out a few weeks. Is that okay?"

The guys glance at each other, but Vox is the first to speak. "Yeah, that'll give us some time to convince him, right?"
